He is a really bright kid, problem is he is so forgetful because he doesn't focus or pay attention to anything. It is getting to be a bigger problem and it's driving my husband nuts. My son will write that he has tests in his agenda but won't bring home the study material or he'll forget the homework assignments at school.
Bedtime routines and morning routines are a constant remind remind remind to the point of stressing everyone out. So I finally made large lists of what they need before they leave the house, lunch, homework, backpack, coat, boots, mitts, (even coat and boots will be forgotten as he leaves the house.) While I was at it I made lists for what to do when he gets home, goes to bed, gets up in the morning and a very large one for my daughter reminding her to wash her hands in the bathroom.
I am going to leave them up for 8 weeks and see if that will help him create habits that will last a lifetime. I'm hoping by having the checklist in front of his face we won't be constantly at him reminding him of basic things.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.
My Son Won't Focus Resulting in Forgetfulness
Date Night with My Son to see the Movie of our Favorite Book - Inkheart
We have been waiting for the movie for what seems like years. We set a date night just the two of us to see the movie adaptation of our favorite book when it went into pre-production. The book has more details then the movie but the movie did not disappoint. We both wanted to see it again when it ended, of course I couldn't afford the ticket price.
I love date nights with my son and girls nights out with my daughter. I always learn so much about them and how they think during this special one on one time. My son and I love the same type of movies and stories so it is a time of bonding. Reading a chapter or two before bed and then to share the movie together completes it.
Movies from books miss so much of the story or go off on their own tangent that the story is changed. Inkheart though it condensed a lot of the action, it did get the bulk of the story true to the book. The characters looked and acted like what we expected, except maybe Batista, I was expecting more menacing. Usually when you wait so long for something you are disappointed but this movie was what we expected - great!

To Ponder - The colour of Vanilla Ice Cream
If Vanilla Beans are Black, Pure Vanilla Extract is Black, and imitation Vanilla Extract is Black, why is vanilla ice cream white?
Spending Too Much Time Behind the Camera Perserving Memories
Last night we went to the Airdrie Festival of Lights, which was cold and beautiful. It ended with a spectacular fireworks display and as I took pictures I realized something; I spend so much time looking through a camera to preserve memories I'm not apart of. Looking at something through the lens of a camera or a video camera removes you from experiencing that which you are trying to preserve.
How much time do we spend watching those videos that we spend so much energy taking? We take video to preserve memories that we won't have. By watching something through a camera you are removed from actually experiencing it and remembering the emotion of it. You are not engaged in the event you are trying to preserve so is it really a memory worth remembering?
Personally I love taking pictures they help trigger memories later on in life. I just have to stop trying to only take pictures and try to spend more time in the moment enjoying the situation I am trying to preserve forever. Next time your child has a school play try putting the camera in someone else's hands or a tripod and just enjoy the moment of watching your child perform. That memory will last in your mind and heart longer than any you preserved in video.
